China said Wednesday it had stopped importing some car models made by French automaker Renault due to "safety problems."
After recent checks, the nation's safety watchdog said it had found some of the cars imported into the country did not conform with China's standards and regulations, according to a statement posted on its website.
"There are severe hidden safety problems," the statement said, without specifying what these issues were.
China has instructed importers to stop bringing several Renault models into the country, such as the Laguna Ph2, Scenic and Megane Ph2 — popular vehicles in France.
China imported fewer than 3,000 Renault cars in 2008, according to Chinese press reports.
