One worker was killed and two others were missing after an explosion ripped through a petrochemical plant in northeast China Sunday that also caused several injuries, state media said.

The blast at the Dengta Jinhang Petrochemical Co., in Jianshanzi village of Liaoning province, occurred around dawn, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Windows in buildings near the plant were shattered, injuring many locals, and at least five people suffered fractured limbs, according to the agency.

It said the explosion was so powerful it could be heard 40 kilometres (25 miles) away.

More than 30 fire engines rushed to the scene, and the blaze was brought under control within two hours, the agency said.

Local officials could not immediately be reached for comment when contacted by AFP Sunday.
