Dogs in a small Slovenian town went "crazy", according to a local newspaper, after salt from a dry-cured ham factory was mistakenly used to de-ice snowy roads.
Italian dry-cured ham, known as prosciutto, is considered a delicacy but no-one in Sezana, near the Italian border, ever expected to see it appearing on their pavements.
"The winter service operator in Sezana (last week) spread salt that had previously been used in a local prosciutto factory plant," police spokeswoman Anita Leskovec told AFP on Tuesday.
It left the air reeking of ham, pieces of which appeared as the snow started melting over the weekend.
Local daily Primorske Novice reported the unusual aroma "made dogs go crazy" when their owners took them for a walk.
A spokesman for Sezana's winter service operator told Primorske Novice that they had borrowed some waste salt from a local ham factory several years ago and completely forgot about it until last week when they used it by mistake.
