The US House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly passed new unilateral sanctions on Iran, sending the sweeping package to President Barack Obama to sign into law.

Lawmakers voted 408-8 to approve the measure, which aimed to break Tehran's defiance of global calls to freeze its suspect nuclear program, hours after it cleared the US Senate by a 99-0 margin.
