A US Navy vessel was en route Tuesday to waters where the "El Faro" sank during a hurricane, in an effort to locate the doomed cargo ship and its "black box."
El Faro was en route from Florida to Puerto Rico with a cargo of containers and automobiles when it was caught on October 1 in a ferocious storm in the Bahamas.
The entire crew of 33 is believed to have perished.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a statement that it has contracted with the US Navy for help recovering wreckage from the ship and El Faro's voyage data recorder.
A US Navy fleet ocean tug boat, the Apache, departed Little Creek, Virginia late Monday, outfitted with special equipment and carrying US Coast Guard crew as well as workers from Tote Maritime, the company that owned the doomed vessel.
Also on board are workers from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) a private firms enlisted to help with the effort.
The NTSB said in a statement that the search would take at least two weeks, perhaps longer.
