ABSL Space Products celebrates delivery of the first Lithium-ion battery hardware built in Colorado. This is a major milestone as ABSL has now demonstrated end-to-end Lithium-ion battery expertise by designing, building and testing hardware entirely on American soil.

The Colorado team is now actively working seven separate space battery contracts using four different Lithium-ion space cells. The current customer list comprises several NASA field sites as well as US prime and subsystem manufacturers.

The announcement marks a milestone in a contract awarded by Moog Inc, for whom ABSL must deliver multiple 340V batteries. These high voltage systems will be used to power a prototype system for a future human-rated launch vehicle technology demonstration.

For this program, hardware consists of multi-module battery systems employing cutting edge high power Lithium-ion cell technology. The first batch of batteries have now been dispatched and build has commenced on the next set.

ABSL was able to deliver the first batch in less than three months from contract award due to high voltage expertise established on other space battery programs such as the MARES battery which will be the first high voltage Lithium-ion battery to fly on the International Space Station.

ABSL established the Colorado facility in order to better service the needs of the North American market. ABSL is the recognized world leader in the supply of Lithium-ion batteries for spacecraft and launch vehicles with more than 13,000 cell years of space operation without failure and contracts from customers on five continents.

ABSL Space Products (formerly AEA Technology Space)

ABSL Space Products is the world leader in the supply of Lithium-ion batteries for space applications with contracts for more than one hundred spacecraft and launch vehicles.

ABSL supplied the first rechargeable Lithium-ion battery flown in space, and now over forty spacecraft are flying powered by ABSL Lithium-ion battery technology.

ABSL has built up a global customer base, winning major contracts from NASA, ESA, and major prime manufacturers in North America, Europe and the rest of the world. ABSL has highly varied space energy storage capability having delivered primary, secondary, high power, high energy and high voltage solutions to the space industry.

ABSL has demonstrated in orbit the most reliable Lithium-ion products currently available for the space market by accumulating over 13,000 cell years of space operation without failure.

ABSL has been active in the space industry since the 1960s during the early days of ion-thruster development. During the 1980s, ABSL was the largest non-US subcontractor to the United States Strategic Development Initiative (SDI). More recently, effort has been focused on its power and optical products, such as LIDAR and infrared calibration systems.
