A pair of giant pandas arrived in Taiwan Tuesday from southwest China on a historic mission amid warming ties between the two sides.

The pandas called "Tuan Tuan" and "Yuan Yuan," both four years old, landed at Taoyuan airport on board a chartered jet from Taiwan's EVA Airways around 5:03 pm (0903 GMT) following a flight of more than two-and-a-half hours from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.

After a quarantine period, they will be unveiled to the public in late January as a symbol of improved relations with China in recent months.
