A tropical storm that hit the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar this month killed at least 83 people and affected some 187,000, according to new figures released Friday.
Madagascar's disaster preparedness and management bureau said the southeastern region of Manakara was the worst hit by tropical storm Hubert, with 26 people killed and 34 still missing.
The latest statistics showed that 108 schools had been damaged and thousands of hectares of farmland inundated in a country already crippled by a year-old political crisis and international sanctions.
The European Union announced in a statement on Friday it was allocating 268,000 euros (359,000 dollars) for emergency relief following the storm that swept the island March 10-12.
