The US Senate will likely approve a comprehensive package of tough new economic sanctions against Iran, but not until next year, a top Senate ally of President Barack Obama said Thursday.
Asked about the prospects the Senate could pass such a measure, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin replied: "I think there's a good chance for that and I think there'd be strong bipartisan support."
But asked whether action could come this year, Durbin, the party's number two leader in the Senate, shook his head and replied: "No."
The US Senate seems likely to remain consumed with legislation to enact Obama's top domestic priority, remaking US health care, for the rest of 2009, and must also approve annual government spending packages.
