Are selfie sticks on the way out? Advances in 'nano-suction' technology may be pointing in that direction. At Shenzen-based epoxy skin and vinyl sticker maker Dowa Group, hopes are high that its new line of self-adhesive cell phone cases will eventually make cumbersome rods and mechanical cell phone mounting systems redundant.
The Dowacase employs putty-like polyurethane epoxy, which works like thousands of tiny octopus-like arms, relying on the combined power of vacuum pockets to hold the device in place against almost any flat, smooth surface. The material sports anti-slip, anti-scratch, and anti-drop qualities that make it ideal for taking selfies, and frees up the hands to perform other tasks.
Simply pressing the case for a few seconds to a clean, glossy non-crenelated surface (mirrors, cabinets, sheet metal, and glass are ideal) is usually enough to do the trick.
Depending on the condition of the medium, the suction effect can remain effective for several minutes to 48 hours.
Dowcases can be washed and re-used almost indefinitely, and leave no residue. The company touts them as resistant to yellowing for up to three years at normal room temperature.
"Nanosuction technology is no longer new, but it is improving. As the suction power increases there will be more and more applications, which should expand its portability and convenience," says Dowa Group sales director Andy Tang. Especially for younger consumers, making it look cool is important."
Cases are available for several series of iPhones, iPads, Samsung Galaxy, Blackberry, and Sony devices, with more in development. Dowa welcomes OEM/ODM contracts and can incorporate decorative designs.
