Britain will increase the number of short-term training teams in Oman by about a third this year, according to a U.K. Ministry of Defense announcement Tuesday.
Britain's military plans to deploy 45 training teams in 2016, compared with an annual average of 34, and is considering a permanent training facility in the country.
The teams will play roles in training Omani troops on crisis management, combat response for medical teams and teaching engineers how to use vital equipment.
"The uplift complements a comprehensive programme of exercises which includes a four day maritime exercise focussing on sea mine threats and a six week land exercise to train Omani troops on how to operate in a mountainous environment," the ministry said.
The commitment came as U.K. Defense Secretary Michael Fallon met with Omani Defense Minister Sayyid Badr bin Saud bin Harub Al Busaidi.
